Memorial Day celebrations underway in Columbia

Memorial Day celebrations are underway in Columbia Monday morning.

The annual wreath-laying ceremony will took place at 9 a.m. at the Boone County Courthouse.

The 40-minute ceremony honored the fallen, serving military and veterans with wreath presentations, music by the Columbia Community Band, the Boone County Protection Fire District Pipes and Drums and military firearms salute by the American Legion Post 202 Honor Guard. L. Stephen Gaither was the keynote speaker.

Then, at 10 a.m., the Memorial Day parade will begin at the Stephens College campus near Broadway and Dorsey and will run west on Broadway through Fifth Street.

Streets around the parade staging area will be closed by 9:00 a.m. and the remainder of the route will be closed no later than 9:30 a.m., according to the city.
