Columbia man accused of attacking child

A 39-year-old Columbia man was charged Monday after his arrest on suspicion of strangling and punching a girl.

Prosecutors charged Chanvessna Meas with fourth-degree domestic assault, child endangerment and child abuse.

Columbia police arrested Meas on Sunday in the 1600 block of Quest Drive. Two witnesses said they watched as Meas pulled the car over and began strangling a child with both hands. The girl and witnesses said Meas also punched her before she was able to get away.

According to the court documents, Meas strangled, punched and threatened the child’s life at gunpoint a month ago.

Meas has a previous history of charges including child endangerment; domestic assault; felony drug possession; and possessing and selling illegal weapons.

Meas posted bond, according to online court records. No hearings have been set.
