Settlement reached between city and parents of child hit by CPD vehicle

A settlement was reached Monday between the family of a girl killed in Battle High School’s parking lot and the city of Columbia, according to city spokesman Steve Sapp.

The settlement was reached during a hearing in Boone County court Monday afternoon. The details of the settlement are currently sealed, according to Sapp.

Gabriella Curry, 4, was struck on Jan. 4 when Officer Andria Heese, 27, tried to park on the sidewalk so that she could watch students load onto the school buses, according to a crash report.

Authorities said the child was walking on the sidewalk when she was struck by the vehicle. Curry was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Per department protocol, Heese was put on administrative leave.

Sapp said the city’s law department would review the order with state open records law before releasing any details of the settlement.

Crane appointed Camden County Prosecutor Heather Miller as special prosecutor to review the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash investigation. Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight recused hismelf from the case in January, citing his working relationship with the Columbia Police Department. Miller has not yet said when she will decide on how to proceed with the case.
