United Airlines flight to Columbia redirected to Iowa

A United Airlines flight headed to Columbia from Chicago made a detour to Des Moines on Friday night after trying to land in Missouri.

According to FlightAware.com, UAL 5437 left O’Hare International Airport at 3:58 p.m. Friday and anticipated landing at COU at 5:35 p.m. The flight, however, circled COU twice before heading to Des Moines International Airport.

The website shows that the flight took off from Des Moines at 8:23 p.m. and landed at COU at 9:05 p.m.

SkyWest, the regional carrier operating the flight, told ABC 17 News that the flight diverted to Des Moines due to weather and “continued on to Columbia after weather conditions improved,” according to a statement from corporate communications.
