State flags more wines made in Eldon

State regulators are warning of more types of wine made by an Eldon business that pose the risk of exploding bottles.

The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control said in a news release that 13 more types of wine made by Casa de Loco were never submitted to regulators for inspection. The notice comes after the agency last week warned of six types of uninspected Casa de Loco wine. Some of the bottles had exploded, including one the agency had taken into evidence, according to the notice sent last week.

The additional wines flagged in Friday’s release are Area 51 Custom Red, Area 51 Reserve, Human Ink Series, Just Crystal, Maladjusted, Manic Malvazia, Paranoid Pinot, Peach Shine, Redneck Therapy, Simply Marvalous [sic], Straight Jacket Syrah, Trumans Big Red and Zinfandel Port.

The agency learned of the additional wines during its investigation of the company.

The company’s wines have been distributed to retailers in Camdenton, Glasgow, Jefferson City, Keytesville, Lake Ozark, Lebanon, Newburg, Osage Beach, Salisbury, Springfield, St. Joseph, St. Robert, Stoutland, Sunrise Beach, Warsaw and Wright City as well as Wichita, Kansas, the agency said.

State regulators are continuing to investigate Casa de Loco and have contacted retailers about removing the wines from their shelves, the release said. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is investigating the company for possible health and sanitation violations at its manufacturing location, according to the release.

All of the wines seized by regulators were destroyed, officials said.

Casa de Loco owner Larry Owens said last week that production of the wines were immediately halted when the problems were discovered.
