Several Jefferson City schools locked down briefly

Three Jefferson City schools were put on a short lockdown Friday as police investigated a weapons offense.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Lawson and Pioneer Trail elementary schools were put on modified lockdown, meaning no one was allowed into or out of the schools, as a precautionary measure for about 15 minutes early Friday afternoon, Jefferson City Public Schools said in a Facebook post.

The Jefferson City Police Department suggested the lockdown because police were investigating a weapons offense by a suspect in the area.

Notification was sent to parents soon after the incident.

JCPD spokesman Lt. David Williams said police investigated a weapons offense in the 4400 block of Merry Lane. No property was damaged and police found no victims, Williams said. He said there was no active pursuit involved.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been corrected to note that police were not chasing a suspect.
