Gun stolen during overnight string of thefts from Ashland vehicles
Police in Ashland responded to five reported thefts from vehicles Thursday night.
Chief Lyn Woolford told ABC 17 News the department believes all five vehicles were unlocked when the crimes occurred.
The department said the five thefts happened on Ponderosa Lane, Kristi Lane, Redwood Drive and Amanda Drive.
Woolford said a gun was stolen from one of the unlocked vehicles, and the keys to that vehicle were also inside.
One of the victims told police that his vehicle had been locked, but investigators said there was no sign of damage or a break-in.
Woolford said gun owners should carry their firearms on their person when possible and avoid storing them in a vehicle, particularly overnight.
If guns are stored in a vehicle, Woolford said they should be kept out of plain sight, along with any other valuable items.
“Thieves can be encouraged to break in a vehicle in which a valuable item is in view, as it indicates a guaranteed score,” said Woolford.
The five car break-ins are believed to be connected and the investigation is ongoing.
