School staff member accused of child enticement

A former assistant football and track coach in the North Callaway School District has been charged with child enticement.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office said Davonte Kyles, 23, of Columbia, was charged Tuesday with one count of child enticement after his arrest Monday afternoon at Auxvasse Elementary School. Kyles was in the Callaway County Jail on Tuesday on $40,000 bond.

The investigation started Friday when officials received information that Kyles had “engaged in inappropriate contact with a student at the school,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The investigation continues and further charges are possible, the sheriff’s office said.

In a separate news release the school district said it had fired Kyles and he is barred from district property.

A probable cause statement filed with the Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said a child less than 15 years old reported she had received inappropriate messages from Kyle. The girl told investigators the messages started in October, according to the statement.

The sheriff’s office said school officials immediately contacted law enforcement and steps were taken to ensure students’ safety. The sheriff’s office and district said they would release no further information.

Kyles was certified as a substitute teacher in August, according to Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education records.
