Man who killed person in east Columbia to be sentenced in May
A man who shot and killed a person in east Columbia is set to be sentenced next month.
On Thursday, Judge Brian Wimes scheduled Ricky Gurley’s sentencing hearing for May 14 at the federal courthouse in Jefferson City.
Gurley previously pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon in relation to the shooting death of Cameron Caruthers in 2017. Gurley said he killed Caruthers in self-defense at a home on Dawn Ridge Road.
Gurley had been convicted of a felony in 1997, making it unlawful for him to have a gun.
Caruthers’ parents sued Gurley over their son’s death. Caruthers’ friends and family have doubted Gurley’s account that the 28-year-old Army veteran attacked Gurley. Caruthers had been getting some of his belongings at the home on Dawn Ridge Drive when the shooting took place. Gurley was federally indicted five months later.
