Crush of road work coming in south Columbia
The city has five traffic improvement projects planned for south Columbia. All with construction expected to begin in 2020.
Each project will be funded by the 2015 Capital Improvement Sales Tax, but the planned roundabout at Sinclair Road and Route K will also be funded by the Missouri Department of Transportation and Columbia Public Schools.
“We are providing some funding in regards to sidewalks and some other things,” CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said.
The CPS involvement stems from the construction of the district’s seventh middle school on Sinclair Road, roughly 2.5 miles north of Route K. The total cost of the roundabout project is estimated at just over $1.6 million, but the roundabout isn’t the only piece of it.
“Sinclair and Old Plank are kind of offset right now,” said project engineer Allison Anderson, “it will align those roads as well as create the roundabout.”
Other projects in the area include a roundabout at Sinclair and Nifong, a second Nifong roundabout at Old Mill Creek, the widening of Nifong between Providence and Willowcreek and a dual-lane roundabout at Forum and Green Meadows Road.
Construction on all five projects is expected to start in 2019 and 2020.
The only project that has not been approved is the roundabout at Sinclair and Route K. There will be an interested parties meeting on that project at 5:30 p.m. May 9 at Rock Bridge Elementary School. Project officials will be there to go over the preliminary design for the intersection and answer any questions.
