Fulton Fire Department will soon carry Narcan

The Fulton Fire Department will soon carry a drug to combat opioid overdoses.

Fire Chief Kevin Coffelt asked the Fulton City Council on Tuesday to approve and allow the fire department to carry naloxone, known by the brand name Narcan.

“If we can save a life then it’s definitely worth it,” Coffelt said.

He said the Callaway County Ambulance District will supply the Narcan at no cost to the department.

Fulton’s Fire Department has been responding to EMS calls, other than cardiac arrests, for about two years.

Coffelt said Narcan can help save first responders if they accidently come into contact with drugs such as Fentanyl.

“It doesn’t only effect the people using the drug,” he said. “It can effect the law enforcement out in the field.”

The Fulton City Council plans to discuss the fire department carrying Narcan at Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. council meeting.
