Fayette police warn of man who impersonated officer

The Fayette Police Department said it is investigating a case where a man allegedly posed as a police officer and pulled a woman over Friday morning.

Chief Jeff Oswald posted on Facebook that a citizen reported that she was driving within city limits when a man in a dark-colored SUV pulled up behind her and activated a siren. He apparently did not have or display emergency vehicle lighting, but he did have a spotlight.

She pulled over, and when he approached her vehicle, he told her that her rear brake lights were out. He did not identify himself as law enforcement or ask for her identification, Oswald said.

He then got back in his car and allegedly sped off down Highway 5.

The woman told police the man was white and looked to be about 35 to 40 years old. He was bald and heavyset, and stood at 5 feet, 9 inches tall.

He was wearing dark cargo pants, a black button-up shirt, and a badge that said “police” on it. He also had a duty belt with a long flashlight and pouch attached to it, but the woman said he didn’t appear to have a gun.

Oswald said it is not policy for Fayette police to initiate a traffic stop without activating their emergency lights.

If you have experienced a similar incident, Oswald asks you to call 911 to report it.
