Cunningham selected in WNBA Draft

The Phoenix Mercury selected former Mizzou guard Sophie Cunningham with the 13th overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

Cunningham fell out of the first round, but she is still the highest draft pick in program history. She surpassed Amanda Lassiter, who was taken with the 15th pick in the 2001 draft by the Houston Comets.

The Columbia native is the first former Rock Bridge basketball player to be selected in the WNBA Draft. Cunningham is the first MU player to be taken in the WNBA Draft since Bri Kulas in 2014. The San Antonio Silver Stars selected the MU forward 28th overall.

Cunningham averaged 17.8 points and 5.9 rebounds a game during her senior season. She became Mizzou’s all-time leading scorer on March 9 in MU’s game against Mississippi State at the SEC Tournament. Cunningham finished her career with 2,187 points.
