Missouri River flooding closes Highway 87

Missouri River flooding has closed Highway 87 near its intersection with Highway 40 just outside Boonville .

The highway, which had already been closed a little north of that area because of culvert replacement work, was closed Monday because of floodwaters, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s traveler information map.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis showed the Missouri River near Boonville was expected to crest at 27.7 feet Tuesday night or early Wednesday. That level of flooding is considered “minor” according to official designations.

The river was expected to crest at nearly 32 feet in Glasgow, at or just below “major” flooding level. Moderate flooding is expected on the Jefferson City gauge with a crest of about 26 feet , far below the highest crests in history.

Glasgow Public Works Superintendent Vic Suttner said the department monitors the river and levels at the park. He said the department’s concern lies with the road through the park, the road leading to it and the bridge on old 87 in front of the park.

“At this point the bridge and road leading to the park are safe,” Suttner said. “Stump Island is halfway covered in water. If predictions are accurate we do not expect any more roads to be flooded.”

River flooding has already closed three roads in Boone County — South Rippeto Road at Route N, Smith Hatchery Road at Dothage Lane and South Easley River Road from Route N to Cooper’s Landing.
