AG Schmitt warns of scams, price gouging in wake of flooding
Attorney General Eric Schmitt is warning Missourians about scams and price gouging in the wake of historic flooding. ” Unfortunately, scammers and unscrupulous businesses see natural disasters as a way to take advantage of our state’s most vulnerable. I’m renewing my warning to Missourians, ” Schmitt said. ” Stay safe during the flooding, be hyper vigilant when shopping for essentials, and be thorough before beginning repairs. ” In a news release, Schmitt offered some advice to protect from scams. He said construction fraud is very common during disasters. He said it’s important to get everything in writing and thoroughly review contracts. According to the release, Missouri law prohibits businesses from raising prices for necessities during an emergency. Schmitt said residents need to watch for increases in prices for food, water, gasoline. hotel rooms and other basic needs.
