Attorney general charges Moberly man

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed charges Monday against a Moberly man accused of defrauding people at area food banks.

The felony complaint accuses Kyle McClain of fraudently selling insurance plans to patrons at Boone County food banks under the guise that he was helping them get a grant for dental work, Schmitt’s office said in a news release. McClain was charged with five counts of deceptive business practices, a Class E felony, according to online court records.

Eligibility for the grant, however, didn’t require the purchase of any insurance, according to the release. McClain allegedly made intentional misrepresentations about the sale and illegally profited from the scheme.

McClain was arrested and has already posted bond, the attorney general’s office said. His first court appearance is set for March 25 at the Boone County Courthouse.

No lawyer was listed for McClain in online court records.
