Possible natural gas leak closes Callaway County elementary school
Classes at a North Callaway School District elementary were canceled Wednesday after a possible natural gas leak was discovered.
North Callaway Superintendent Brian Garner said Williamsburg Elementary School was closed and all the students got home safe after the principal and a secretary at about 7 a.m. complained of headaches.
North Callaway Fire Protection District Chief Lana Karhoff said the call came in as a possible carbon monoxide leak but firefighters believe natural gas was the culprit. Karhoff said local officials hope the problem can be fixed in time for school Thursday.
The source of the leak had not been found early Wednesday afternoon, she said.
Parents and guardians were alerted to the closure. No students were sickened by the leak and those who had already arrived at school were sent home, Garner said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the leak or when the school would reopen.
