Tracking snow and bitterly cold temperatures overnight into Sunday morning

***WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES FOR ALL OF MID-MISSOURI START TONIGHT***

The ABC 17 StormTrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day as snow and dangerous cold crash into the regions over the next 36 hours.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will fall into the 20s overnight as will continuing to fill in across Mid-Missouri. We can expect snow to begin as early as midnight for our Western counties and slowing filling in to the rest of Mid-Missouri through 3AM. The heaviest of the snow will fall between 5-9am when most of us typically get out on a Sunday. Winds increase to 10-20mph through the early morning hours.

SUNDAY: Snow will slowly taper off through the late morning and early afternoon across our area with bitter cold arctic air to follow through the evening hours. If you can, PLEASE stay off the roads tonight and tomorrow. as snow will fall with temperatures well below freezing. This will cause many slick spots as road salt becomes less efficient in colder temperatures. In combination with winds, the dry powdery snow is likely to get blown back on to roads that may have already been cleared. This creates a secondary road hazard that we don’t always have to deal with, and will create problems well after the falling snow is gone.

EXTENDED: Following the snow, bitter cold arctic air takes over Sunday as our region will dip some 30+ degrees below the overnight low average. Monday morning will start out near or below zero, accompanies with a biting north breeze that will create wind chills up to 15 degrees BELOW zero. Make sure you and your children are bundled up out the door. Temperatures “rebound” into the upper teens in the afternoon, still 30+ degrees BELOW average. Slow moderation of temperatures will takes us into the work week with our next shot of precipitation arriving by Thursday. Stick with ABC 17 News on air and online as we continue to track the impacts tonight into Sunday.
