Mizzou guard out for the remainder of the season

Mizzou guard Mark Smith will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. A team spokesman said the sophomore will have ankle surgery next Monday.

Smith originally hurt his ankle on Jan. 23 late in the second half against Arkansas. He missed six straight games before returning to the court on Feb. 16 at Ole Miss. Smith played 14 minutes against the Rebels, scoring just three points. The Illinois transfer played 21 minutes in MU’s next game against No. 4 Kentucky, but he was held scoreless on 0-7 shooting from the field. Smith did not play in the Tigers’ last game against Florida this past Saturday.

Before the injury, Smith averaged 13 points and six rebounds a game. The Edwardsville, Ill. native started all 17 games for Mizzou and was one of the top three-point shooters in the SEC. MU is 2-7 since Smith hurt is ankle.

Mizzou is back in action tonight at 6 p.m. on the road against Mississippi State.
