Marshall murder suspect released on bond

A man accused of murder in a Marshall shooting was released from jail on bond this week.

James S. Miller, 55, was released Wednesday on a $500,000 bond, court records show. Miller was arrested after a Dec. 29 shooting that killed Joshua Charles Smith, 31, of Marshall. Smith died in the hospital after the shooting on Viking Lane in Saline County.

Miller is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Miller’s bond order lists 13 conditions he must follow, including continuous GPS monitoring and a requirement that he remain within 50 feet of his house. Miller is also barred from possessing a firearm and from making contact with a person identified in the order by the initials A.S.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for March 7.
