Fulton woman killed in Columbia crash

A Fulton woman died and another Fulton woman suffered serious injuries in a crash on an icy road Thursday morning in east Columbia.

The Columbia Police Department said Wendy Garcia-Raygoza, 24, was killed when a car driven by Eunice McCaleb, 79, crossed the center line and hit Garcia-Raygoza’s car head-on. McCaleb suffered serious injuries in the crash. A pickup truck driving behind McCaleb then hit McCaleb’s vehicle, police said.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. at the Hominy Creek Bridge.

McCaleb was hospitalized with serious injuries. Garcia-Raygoza was pronounced dead at the hospital. The pickup truck driver was not injured.

Garcia-Raygoza was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Police said drugs or alcohol were not suspected as contributing factors in teh crash, but the road was icy.

The crash is the fifth resulting in a death in Columbia this year.

The road was blocked temporarily during the response and investigation.
