Cole County roads treated, crews on standby

All Cole County roads had been treated with salt and other ice melting materials by late Thursday afternoon and crews have been instructed to head home.

Public Works director Larry Benz said his workers will be on standby Thursday night, but he doesn’t expect to activate them based on the forecast.

“Based on the wind we’re going to get, most of the snow is going to blow off the roads,” Benz said. “We don’t expect much accumulation.”

Britt Smith, a manager of Jefferson City Public Works, said they also plan on monitoring roads overnight.

“We’ve treated every road in town,” Smith said. “But… the treatment might have not gotten to every part of the road. That’s the reason why we’re classifying our roads as ‘mostly clear.'”

Ice was an issue Thursday farther north as temperatures plunged behind rain that began late Wednesday. State roads north and west of Boone County remained partly covered with ice at about 4 p.m.

The ice had caused several school districts to cancel classes Friday. The largest to have called off classes by Thursday afternoon was Moberly Public Schools.
