Rain showers bring the chance of icy conditions by this evening
***Winter Weather Advisory from noon Tuesday to noon Wednesday for Chariton, Saline, Randolph, Monroe and Macon counties for possible ice due to freezing rain***
TUESDAY: With cloudy skies in place we will be dry for the start of Tuesday, with a chilly morning commute. Rain is more likely in the afternoon and evening as temperatures warm into the upper 30s. However, areas north of HWY 24 could be slow to warm and freezing rain is possible in the afternoon. This will need to be watched for ice accumulation starting Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night which could lead to slick roads. Minor accumulation is expected, but even a few hundreths of an inch can cause impacts to the roadways. To add to all this, it’s possible that there will be isolated t-storms embedded in the rain Tuesday afternoon-evening.
TONIGHT: On going showers and storms are possible through late this evening. The bulk of the rain will shift near the I-44 corridor overnight with drying conditions to the northwest. Temperatures remain steady in the mid 30s overnight. A light breeze out of the northeast will create for wind chills near 30.
EXTENDED: A nearly stationary boundary will remain across Mid-Missouri with upper level disturbances tracking through. This will lead to a multi-day rain event with possible flooding near I-44 and south where areas could see upwards of 1.5 inches of rain through Thursday. While rain will be the main precipitation type, we could tap into enough cold air as the system tracks out of Mid-Missouri Thursday that could yield some wintry precipitation. Freezing rain is possible Thursday morning in our west-northwest counties while areas farther east and south will start as rain before changing to freezing rain, sleet then snow and ending by Thursday afternoon. Behind the front, expect temperatures to drastically drop, with overnight lows dipping to near 10 Thursday night into Friday morning. Highs will only reach the mid 20s Friday, dropping back into the teens Friday night. It looks like we’ll warm slightly this upcoming weekend, with a chance of snow Saturday night.
