Columbia Public Schools to start late Thursday

Columbia Public Schools will start two hours late Thursday.

The district made the call to delay opening Wednesday afternoon. A few other mid-Missouri schools also decided to delay opening Thursday. Click here for a full list of closings.

CPS’ decision came after snow had begun falling and accumulating in Columbia on Wednesday afternoon.

Public works crews warned that it could cause some problems for the evening commute.

The bitter cold temperatures may make travel even more difficult.

Columbia Public Works crews are out treating and plowing priority routes and plan to work through the evening.

According to Bryan Boyce with Boone County Public Works, they also plan to treat paved priority routes throughout the county. They have 6 trucks working north of I-70 and 6 trucks working south of I-70.

“Gravel is second priority,” he said. “The reason we don’t focus any attention on the gravel is at this temperature, there isn’t anything we can do. Loose rock is froze.”

Drivers should be careful getting home Wednesday evening as the snow will last throughout the evening commute.

Part of mid-Missouri, including Boone and Cole counties, is under a winter weather advisory until midnight. Snow is expected to end by 10 p.m., according to the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team.
