Man arrested for Sunday night double shooting in Boone County

UPDATE, 8:50 p.m.: Detective Tom O’Sullivan with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department told ABC 17 News that Stapleton turned himself in to the station late Monday afternoon.

O’Sullivan said the department suspected Stapleton in the double shooting before he arrived, but would not release details of the investigation.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol found the two shooting victims around 10:45 p.m. after pulling over a car on I-70 at mile marker 89 in Cooper County. Sergeant Scott White said troopers had information about the vehicle the victims might be in. A medical helicopter and ambulance came to the scene on I-70 shortly after troopers had pulled over the car.

ORIGINAL: A man was arrested on Monday for a double shooting that took place Sunday night.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department accused Michael C. Stapleton, 34, of shooting two people in a parking lot Sunday night in the 5600 block of Clark Lane. One of the men had “very serious injuries,” according to a department news release, and remained in a hospital Monday night. The other shooting victim received treatment for his gunshot wound, and was released.

The news release said deputies first got the call about a suspicious person in the 5700 block of Clark Lane, just north of where they say the shooting took place.

The sheriff’s department said Stapleton was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a gun. Stapleton pleaded guilty to a felony drug possession charge in 2015, making it illegal for him to own a gun.

The department’s news release did not say where or when Stapleton was arrested. The agency said the Columbia Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol helped them.
