Dangerous wind chills overnight tonight into Wednesday
****DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS ARE SET TO IMACT MID-MISSOURI TONIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY, WITH WIND CHILL READINGS AS LOW AS -25. ALL COUNTIES ARE EITHER UNDER AN WIND CHILL ADVISORY OR A WIND CHILL WARNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY****
TONIGHT: Tonight will be the coldest night we have seen so far this season with low temperatures falling to -7 for most of Mid-Missouri. The breezy winds we’ve seen through the day will stay with us overnight, yielding wind chill readings as low as -25 in many spots. It’s not out of the question for areas north of Hwy 36 to see wind chill readings near -30. With this brutal cold expected overnight, be mindful as you head outdoors and take the necessary precautions. You will want to make sure that any exposed skin is covered as, as frostbite can occur within 10-15 minutes. We’ll have to watch our record low through the overnight hours, which is -9 set back in 1936.
WEDNESDAY: Another record cold day is possible, with afternoon highs struggling to climb out of the single digits. The record lowest high is 8 set back in 1965, and it’s quite possible we’ll set a new record. With the bitterly cold air in place, temperatures will struggle to climb above 5 degrees in many spots. Additionally, many areas will see an extended period of time where the wind chill readings are below zero. Thankfully, winds do begin to subside into Wednesday as high pressure settles in over us. This will lead to many locations seeing winds out of the northwest up to 10 mph, with wind chills near -10. While most locations will remain on the dry side, afternoon light flurries can’t be ruled out as another clipper tracks in from the northwest.
EXTENDED: Thankfully, the bitter cold will be short-lived, albeit dangerous. The rest of the week will see a slow warming trend, as the jet stream retreats back to the north. We will begin to thaw by Friday with highs rebounding back in the upper 30s and the lower 40s. The weekend looks gorgeous with highs Saturday and Sunday in the low 50s. With the warmer weather, Sunday could bring a chance of scattered showers through the afteroon. Watch ABC 17 News for the latest forecast and check back here for updates.
