Rain to light wintry mix tonight, arctic air returns
TONIGHT: Rain is likely into early evening. A strong cold front will track through Mid-Missouri this evening bringing the return to subfreezing temperatures overnight. As rain is moving east, temperatures fall below freezing from west to east and a brief period of freezing rain mixing with snow is possible. The best chance of this is west of HWY 63 where a glaze of ice and a dusting of snow is possible after 9 PM. As drier air moves in behind the front, the light wintry mix will slowly end, with most locations dry by 5 AM, and overnight lows bottoming out near 20 degrees. It’ll feel more like the single digits tomorrow morning, with winds shifting out of the northwest and gusting up to 26 mph.
WEDNESDAY: Clouds will break up slightly in the afternoon as temperatures stay in the upper 20s to near 30. It will be a cold, windy day with northwesterly winds gusting to 30 mph at times. The wind will make it feel like the teens in the afternoon.
EXTENDED: Lows drop to near 20 degrees by early Thursday morning. Another cold front swings through on Thursday, keeping the clouds around with snow flurries possible in the afternoon.Temperatures will fall into the single digits overnight Thursday as bitterly cold air returns. A northwesterly air flow aloft will drive upper level waves and reinforcing shots of arctic air into the region from Friday through next Monday. With these, brief periods of light snow are possible but moisture will be limited. If snow does develop with any of these waves, it would be light with only minor accumulation. As of now it looks like we could see light snow Friday afternoon and again Saturday but timing could change. We will stay below freezing from Friday through Saturday, warming just above freezing Sunday and Monday before another arctic front moves in, dropping us into the teens Tuesday.
