Mizzou football hires Gibbs, promotes McGee
The Mizzou football team has hired David Gibbs as a defensive assistant coach. The Tigers have also promoted Garrick McGee to an offensive assistant coach.
A release says details of Gibbs and McGee’s contract and specific job titles with be released after the human resources process is completed.
Gibbs has 25 years of coaching experience. He comes to Mizzou after spending the last four seasons as Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator. The Red Raiders forced 29 turnovers in 2017, which led the Big 12 and ranked sixth nationally.
Gibbs has also been the defensive coordinator at Minnesota (1997-2000), Auburn (2005) and Houston (2013-14). In addition, Gibbs was a defensive backs coach for nine seasons in the NFL. He spent time with Denver, Kansas City and Houston.
“I’m very grateful and excited to be part of Coach Odom’s program, this is an outstanding opportunity for me and my family,” said Gibbs in a release. “I’ve known about Mizzou and Columbia for a long time, and I’ve got a ton of respect for Coach Odom and the type of program he runs. I’m looking forward to getting going there and helping Mizzou continue to build upward,” he said.

Garrick McGee started the 2018 season as an offensive analyst for the Tigers. Head coach Barry Odom named him the interim tight ends coach after Joe Jon Finley left for Texas A&M.
Before coming to Mizzou, McGee was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Illinois. He also has head coaching experience – From 2012-13, McGee was the head coach at UAB.
“This past year as part of Coach Odom’s staff showed me that I fit with his culture here at Mizzou, and I’m very appreciative of having the opportunity to continue to be part of it,” said McGee in a release. “I have great admiration for how Coach Odom runs his program, top to bottom, and the focus on the everyday development of the kids. That has always been one of the most important things to me about our roles as coaches – we are here to develop and mentor the kids, and in my opinion, Coach Odom does the best job I have ever seen with this aspect.”
