Canine Sports Center building total loss after roof collapse

The owner of the Columbia Canine Sports Center said Tuesday the building is a total loss after heavy snow caused the roof to collapse Saturday.

Columbia Fire Department crews responded to the building on I-70 Drive S.E. at 3 p.m. Saturday. Crews said no one was injured in the collapse, but they did suspect a gas leak and had the gas turned off.

Owner Kathy Echols said insurance adjusters were on the way to assess the building, but she is already looking at options for replacement. She said the company that built the current building is out of business.

Echols said all agility classes have been canceled and customers are being given refunds. She said some obedience classes will be held in the smaller building on site.

Nearly 17 inches of snow fell at the Columbia Regional Airport over the weekend, with higher totals measured in many places in central Missouri. The total was the fifth-highest for any three-day period on record, the National Weather Service said. Records go back to 1892.

The wet, heavy snow also led to widespread power outages in mid-Missouri as tree limbs snapped under the weight and hit power lines.
