Shelters remain open amid heavy winter storm

Shelters in the Columbia and Boone County area remain open through Saturday night as heavy snow impacts continues to affect mid-Missouri.

The Red Cross will open an emergency overnight shelter at 7 p.m. Saturday at Broadway Christian Church in Columbia. Anyone without power is able to stay at the shelter, Boone County Emergency Management said in a press release. However, the shelter cannot accommodate pets.

“Citizens who will be seeking shelter at this Red Cross shelter are asked to bring any medications, personal items, toiletries and a pillow or blanket that they would be comfortable using,” the release said.

There are also some sports available at the Salvation Army Harbor House.

Room at the Inn is allowing people to stay throughout the day, but the shelter is in need of volunteers for the evening and for Sunday. Volunteers would report to Broadway Christian Church, located at 2601 West Broadway. Call 573-355-7151 to assist.
