Commission upholds CAFO permit

The Missouri Clean Water Commission voted to uphold a permit for a concentrated animal feeding operation in Cooper County on Wednesday.

The commission voted 4-1 to uphold the permit that will allow operation of Tipton East, a 7,404-hog operation slated to be built on Renshaw Drive near the Moniteau County line. The farm, owned by Pipestone System from Minnesota, would come with two barns to house the pigs and one barn to compost animals that die.

Opponents of the permit were concerned the CAFO would contaminate water in the area and appealed the decision in July. Pipestone System plans to export manure from their site to nearby landowners for use as fertilizer.

Opponents can still appeal the decision to district court.
