Columbia man arrested in ‘accidental’ shooting

One person was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Columbia in December.

Antwane L. Grant, 24, of Columbia was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Tavious Grant, 22, was pronounced dead at the hospital on Dec. 19, while undergoing emergency surgery after he was shot at a residence in the 1000 block of Claudell Lane.

After an investigation, detectives found that the victim, the suspect and two other witnesses were in a residence smoking marijuana, according to Columbia Police Department spokesman Jeff Pitts. Antwane asked to see Tavious’ gun, and as he handed the gun back to Tavious, it went off, and the bullet hit Tavious, court documents said.

Antwane told police he might have still had his hand on the trigger when he gave the gun back to Tavious.

Detectives do not believe the shooting was intentional.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect that the gun was Tavious’ and that the gun went off as Antwane was handing it back to Tavious. An earlier version of the story relied on incorrect information from the Columbia Police Department.
