Columbia police warn of phone scam

A scammer impersonating a Columbia police officer is calling residents and demanding money, the department said.

According to a Facebook post, CPD said the scammer is telling people they need to send money in order to get a warrant resolved.

Boone County deputies warned of the same scam last week, where a person posing as a deputy was calling people and demanding payment to absolve a warrant issued for missing jury duty.

The Columbia Police Department said if you get a call like that, don’t give any information and hang up.

Then call Boone County Joint Communications to report it. The number is 573-442-6131. You can also call 311.

The department said it will never call to demand payment over the phone.
