Cierra Porter to return to Mizzou women’s basketball

Cierra Porter is back.

After retiring from basketball, the Mizzou women’s basketball team announced Saturday that Cierra Porter will return to the team. She will be active for Sunday’s game against Arkansas State.

Porter previously had to medically retire from the team in June due to injury complications with her knees.

“We are obviously very excited to welcome Cierra back,” said head coach Robin Pingeton. “She has had a very successful three years here, she brings great experience, and adds much needed depth to our post position. After allowing her knee to calm down and get some rest with some time away, Cierra started feeling pretty good again and wanted to see if she could make one last run at it.”

The Tigers desperately need someone of Porter’s size and talent is they inch closer to the SEC schedule.

Porter earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors in 2015-16 after scoring 8.6 points and grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game. Her 266 total points in her debut season rank as the tenth-most in school history. Porter also ranks fifth all time in rebounding in school history.

Porter is just four points shy of 1,000 career points in a Mizzou uniform. She started 90 of 94 games and battled through knee concerns throughout her junior season. Porter helped lead Mizzou to three straight NCAA tournament appearances.

The Tigers next face Arkansas State Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
