Fire damages southwest Columbia home

A house fire in southwest Columbia was under investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were sent at about 3 p.m. to 4801 Centerbrook Court in the Thornbrook subdivision after reports of smoke coming from a home. Crews found a fire near the kitchen, but the cause and point of origin are still under investigation, said Columbia Fire Department Assistant Chief Brad Fraizer.

No one was home at the time of the fire but a dog died of smoke inhalation, Fraizer said. It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control, the department said in a news release. Eight units were sent to the call.
