Columbia police make arrest in Aspen Heights shooting

Columbia police said they arrested a 20-year-old Sunday in connection with a shooting that injured one person on Saturday.

Officers said Jaylen James, of Columbia, was arrested on charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and tampering with physical evidence.

Police were called to the 3800 block of Aspen Heights Parkway around 2:40 p.m. Saturday for reports of gunshots.

At the scene, officers found an adult victim, who was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting was first reported as accidental, but officers said they are still investigating.

Police asked for anyone with information about the shooting to call the department, or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.
