Woman sues SSM Health over alleged privacy violation

A Holts Summit woman is suing SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital after she claims it didn’t do enough to protect the privacy of her medical records.

According to the lawsuit filed in Cole County, the patient, referred to as “T.K,” received a letter in July from SSM Health notifying her that her protected health information was left in open locations in the old St. Mary’s building, which was being readied for demolition.

The lawsuit alleged that the medical records were “shared with the public.”

The lawsuit said T.K. suffered damage including loss of privacy, loss of medical expenses and emotional distress, among other things.

ABC 17 News contacted SSM Health for a statement on Wednesday.

“As a matter of corporate policy, SSM Health does not comment on pending litigation,” SSM Health said.
