Weather Aware and Weather Alert Days explained

A small amount of ice or snow can cause problems on roads and we don’t want you to get caught off guard this winter.

New this year, the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team will issue weather aware or weather alert days any time hazardous winter weather is expected to give you advanced warning.

Here is the difference between the two:

A weather aware day will be issued to keep you aware for the possibility of nuisance weather events that could have an impact on your daily routine and cause you to alter your plans. The weather is not expected to be dangerous or life-threatening but could have minor impacts on your day such as a much slower commute, delayed or shortened school day, or the need to bundle up the kids more for the bus stop. These will be shown on our seven-day forecast with an orange bar labeled “weather aware day.”

A weather alert day will be issued if dangerous or life -threatening weather is expected such as heavy snow, blizzard, widespread ice or extremely cold air. These will be shown on our seven-day forecast with a red bar labeled “weather alert day.” There will always be updated information on the aware or alert days on our website and on social media, along with a full explanation using special graphics during our newscasts.
