Better Business Bureau says more than 11 million homeowners experienced package theft last year
Holiday shopping season is here, but according to the Better Business Bureau so are thieves.
Regional Director Michelle Gleba said thieves stealing packages off doorsteps is a major problem.
“Nationwide, last year, there were more than 11 million homeowners who experienced theft involving a package delivered to their door,” Gleba said.
According to Business Wire, nearly one in 10 Americans have had a package stolen right off their doorstep.
The Better Business Bureau suggests tracking your package.
“Sign-up for a tracking alert so you are aware of when your package might be delayed and when your package is delivered,” Gleba said.
She also recommends asking for a signature, so you guarantee you will be home when they drop off the package.
“This can cost a little bit more, but it can be better to ensure a peace of mind,” Gleba said.
Gleba also said using a credit card will help ensure that you are protected if anything goes wrong.
“If something were to go wrong or you are a victim of fraud, it can be easier to work with credit card companies,” Gleba said.
The Better Business Bureau also recommends insuring pricier items.
Gleba said if you want to skip the potential of your package getting stolen, you can also see if your online purchase can be picked up at a store location.
“Some online retailers will offer certain delivery hubs that are located near you,” Gleba said.
Other tips include purchasing a lock-box for your doorstep or a Package Guard, which will sound off an alarm if your package is being stolen.
