New England man suspected of stealing from Boone County arrested
A New Hampshire man has been arrested on charges of defrauding Boone County for more than $46,000.
Kamal Mardi was charged in June with felony stealing after the Boone County Treasurer’s Office alerted authorities in December 2017 about the theft. Boone County Treasurer Tom Darrough at the time said his office received an email requesting a change of account information for Emery Sapp and Sons. However, the company had not make the request, and investigators allege Mardi deposited the money into an account at TD Bank.
Detective Tom O’Sullivan said they find Mardi comes after nearly 11 months of working around the clock.
“You just back-track, it’s a very painstaking process,” O’Sullivan said.
He said they worked with the FBI, IRS and several local and out of state law enforcement agencies.
Back in June, deputies told us they found surveillance video of Mardi as well.
O’Sullivan said he was found in Massachusetts.
“He got picked up in Massachusetts and then brought back here to our jail,” O’Sullivan said.
O’Sullivan said they used a private car service to bring him back to Missouri.
Mardi was arrested Thursday and an arraignment was scheduled for Friday afternoon. He was in the Boone County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
The Boone County Treasurer Tom Darrough said today means justice for him and his department.
“It’s a big deal for me personally because this money came from my office and I feel responsible for the loss so I’m excited so I’m excited that we’re at this stage and not just justice, but have the chance of getting the money back,” Darrough said.
Darrough said they’ve done a lot to improve their ACH file change procedure since the incident.
According to a statement provided by the Boone County CJ Dykhouse, “Now, all ACH file change requests will be verified through independent contact with the vendor through a separate, known, good point of contact.
They state that a ACH file change will require cross-checking first before being approved.
