Police respond to shots fired calls in central Columbia

Several Columbia Police Department units were at two scenes in central Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers and other first responders were at the Parkway Apartments, 217 W. Broadway, and on nearby Garth Avenue. Emergency radio traffic indicated a possible shooting but police at the scene said they have found no one shot. Police received several calls of shots fired from the area, though. A woman was hurt but it was not clear how. She refused medical attention, police said.

Police said the scene is “stable” and there is no danger to the community. However, officers and a police dog were tracking someone.

Nearby Grant Elementary was placed on lockdown, Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark wrote in an email. The lockdown was lifted before the school dismissed students at 3:20 p.m.

Crime scene tape is up outside the Parkway Apartments.
