Warming centers available in Boone County as temperatures drop

There are a number of warming centers available in Boone County as temperatures continue to drop.

The Salvation Army’s Harbor House, the Columbia Public Library and the Boone County Government Centers are just a few of the locations. You can find a full list here.

Major Jack Holloway with the Salvation Army’s Harbor House said they have cold cots for people after 4 p.m. He said people can also get a meal, stay in the shelter if it’s not full and get breakfast in the morning. Holloway said the shelter is typically full because they support men, women and children, but if that’s the case, cots will be available.

“We want to protect people. We don’t want them to be outside and get hurt or hurt themselves in anyway,” Holloway said.

An official with MU Health Care told ABC 17 News that University Hospital has already treated at least one person for a weather-related accident.

Dr. Chris Sampson, who works in the ER, said it’s important to take precautions in winter weather. That includes things like allowing extra time to reach your destination, having a cold-weather gear in your car and be aware of ice and snow, particularly when walking pets.
