UPDATE: Witnesses say victims identified Crawley as shooter
UPDATE, 7:06 p.m.: The trial will resume at 8:30 a.m.
ABC 17 News will have full coverage.
UPDATE: Opening statements got underway at about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. The state and the defense gave opening statements.
Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight opened for the state. He gave the jury an overview of the case and stressed how he will prove this week that Crawley shot the victims: Chelsea Hyde and Quenten Hurt.
Knight alluded to several pieces of evidence that the jury will see, including surveillance video from businesses, gunpowder residue, and recorded phone conversations.
Crawley and Hyde had previously been in an intimate relationship, but in 2016 Hyde began dating Hurt. Hurt and Crawley were both in jail at the same time, but Knight said that Hurt had a no contact provision with Crawley and that whenever Hyde visted Hurt, Crawley got mad. Knight said Crawley threatened both the victims in the past.

Public defender Derek Roe got things underway for the defense. He opened by saying “Denico Crawley is not guilty” and claimed that an encounter just before the shooting in a Metro PCS store on the Business Loop did not prove Crawley was involved.

Several witnesses talked about hearing the shooting on I-70 just after the Business Loop merge, but did not see the shooting actually happen.
Several witnesses who attempted to help Hyde and Hurt at the Vetizon store where they ended up post shooting testified. Two of them said that both Hyde and Hurt stated that Crawley was the one who shot them.
Roe during cross-examination called into question the validity of those statements, considering witness testimony that Hyde was extremely emotional and “freaking out.” She was also going in and out of consciousness.
Several medical experts, including the doctor that attended to the victims and a forensic pathologist, testified late in the afternoon.
Hurt died three weeks after the shooting from a pulmonary embolism. Knight’s witnesses testified that the blood clot resulted from the 2 gunshot wounds Hurt sustained in late June.
ORIGINAL STORY: After several hours of jury selection, 12 people and a few alternates are ready to hear opening arguments in the trial of Denico Sanchez Crawley.
Crawley is accused in the death of Quenten Hart, 25, who died after he was shot several times in his car near the Highway 63 connector on June 26, 2017.
According to court documents, Crawley pulled up alongside Hart’s vehicle, and shot toward the driver’s side several times. Hart and a females victim were hit multiple times.
Hart died a few weeks later. Crawley, who had already been arrested for the shooting, was charged with second degree murder.
The court is in recess until 2:00 p.m. and then the defense and prosecution will begin with their opening statements.
ABC 17 News will update this story as more details emerge about each side’s case.
