Suspicious incidents on the rise in recent years around State Capitol

Data from the Capitol Police Department shows an increase in the number of suspicious activity reports in recent years.

According to their annual activity reports, the number of suspicious incidents has more than doubled from 2011 to 2016, with 157 reports and 380, respectively.

The term suspicious incident includes suspicious packages, persons, cars and other incidents, according to the reports.

One recent example that made headlines was a piece of mail that was delivered to a state senator. The office of Democratic Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal of St. Louis received a package that was leaking a green substance, which prompted a call to the Cole County Hazardous Materials Unit.
