Cole County sheriff warns of phone scam

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about another scam in which a caller impersonates a deputy.

In the most recent scam the caller identifies himself or herself as “Sgt. Jenkins,” tries to get personal information and says the sheriff’s department needs a money order to take care of an arrest warrant, the department said in a news release. Sheriff John Wheeler in the release said the department will never call anyone about an arrest warrant or solicit money over the phone.

“We show up and serve it,” Wheeler said of warrants.

Anyone with questions should call the sheriff’s department at 573-634-9160.
