South Columbia fire considered ‘suspicious’
Several police and fire units were on West Bethany Drive in south Columbia on Wednesday morning to what was later deemed a suspicious fire.
Officials at the scene said the fire was still under investigation and later said in a news release that the fire should be considered “suspicious.” The fire started in the kitchen and was contained within 10 minutes of first responders’ arrival.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and there was no major damage. However, a domesticated rabbit was killed in the fire.
A damage estimate of the fire was not available as of Wednesday afternoon. The Columbia Police Department assisted in the investigation.
Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley arrived on scene with his arson dog, “Izzo.”
“His sole purpose is to assist us as an investigators and on determining cause and origin of a fire,” Pasley said.
Investigators said Izzo determines if ignitable liquids were used to start a fire.
The scene cleared at 1:30 p.m. ABC 17 News saw contractors securing the duplex.
