Mid-Missouri Business Week: MU Health combats nursing shortage

As a nursing shortage continues across the nation, the University of Missouri Health System is working to find creative ways to attract and retain workers.

Peter Callan, the director of talent acquisition and development at MU Health, says some of these ways include relocation incentives, tuition assistance, opportunities for career advancement and good benefits and pay.

“People do come to us for the pay and benefits and perks, but they stay because of the culture,” Callan said. “Our mission is to save and improve lives, and when you have 6,310 people focused on that one mission every night and day, it’s pretty powerful.”

Just within the last four years, Callan said the system added more than 1,200 positions. He expects the trend to continue this year, with an estimated addition of 300 jobs expected.
