Overnight rain to help drought-stricken areas

TONIGHT: Widespread showers and storms are expected to form just to the northeast of Kansas City into the night, ahead of an approaching warm front. These storms will likely grow in size due to moisture rich air from the south flowing into the storms. While there is a marginal risk for severe weather, cloud coverage and rain earlier in the day should limit any severe threat. However, a better chance of strong storms will exist as we head into the morning as the warm front gradually begins to lift through the region. Heavy rain is possible across Central Mid-Missouri into tomorrow, with frequent lightning not out of the question. Overnight lows will bottom out in the mid 60s, with winds out of the south up to 15 mph. Winds could gusts as high as 20 through the night.

FRIDAY: Morning storms will be approaching Hwy 63 as early as 3 AM and will continue to track off to the east through the day. You’ll want ot grab that umbrella for the morning commute, as rain will still be with us. Rain is expected to come to an end from west to east into the afternoon hours, making for some dry time and temperatures to recover into the mid and upper 80s. It’ll still be breezy through the day with winds out of the south up to 17 mph and gusting as high as 25. An additional round of storms is possible into the evening hours Friday, which could bring some rain to Football Friday.

EXTENDED: Lingering showers are expected into Saturday morning, mainly for the extreme southern half of the viewing area. Beyond that expect the return to summer, as much warmer air moves in behind the front. The weekend looks hot with highs in the low 90s Saturday and mid 90s Sunday under partly cloudy skies. It will also be humid this weekend and heat indices will reach as high as 103 degrees. The heat & dry weather continues through the middle of next week. By Wednesday the upper level ridge looks to break down, which will open the door for a cold front to try to track through. This will bring the return to isolated showers and storms with cooler weather. Watch ABC 17 for the latest forecast and check back here for updates.
