Elementary school teachers prepare for first day with active shooter training
Teachers at West Elementary School in Jefferson City completed an active shooter training in their building Wednesday, the eve of the district’s first day of the school year.
Frank Underwood, the Safety and Security Coordinator for Jefferson City Public Schools, says the training was the first for the district this year. They plan on conducting the same training in all of the 18 JCPS school buildings.
“The teachers were very receptive,” Underwood said after the training. “This is their building, this is their environment. We want them to be trained in their environment, so they can can say, ‘Hey, what if?'”
The district is also starting regular active shooter training for students during the year, as well as increasing the number of other emergency drills. For more on that, click here.
The remaining JCPS schools will complete their trainings throughout the 2018-2019 school year, ending in May. The next active shooting training will be held at Jefferson City High School and the Nichols Career Center on Aug. 29.
