Owner responsibility to maintain building safety

The City of Columbia inspects a building after it’s first constructed, after a major renovation of if there is a visible violation from the outside. There are no annual inspections.

Building Official Larry Burkhardt said Jefferson City follows similar inspection guidelines to Columbia.

“Ongoing building maintenance that’s the responsibility of the owner,” said Columbia’s Community Development Director Tim Teddy.

Teddy said the city will investigate a building if it is visibly deteriorating or a hazard. The city can open a code enforcement case.

The only buildings the City of Columbia does regularly inspect are residential rental properties for maintenance. Jefferson City does not have a residential rental inspection program.
